Surfer’s Beach is my favorite spot that you can reach by road on Kodiak Island. It sits about an hour outside of town, and the drive alone feels like part of the adventure. The road has a mix of winding coastal stretches, mountainous views, and thick forest along the way, making it one of the most beautiful drives on the Kodiak road system. Every time I make the trip out there, it reminds me why this is one of the most special places to photograph sessions on the island.

When Tyler reached out to plan his proposal to Makenna, Surfer’s Beach felt like the perfect location. It is quiet, remote, and completely surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes moments feel even bigger than they already are. Winter in Kodiak can be unpredictable, especially this far out of town, but Makenna and Tyler were both such great sports and came fully prepared to brave the cold for the experience.

The day of the session brought everything you would expect from a Kodiak winter at the beach. Cold wind coming off the water, gray skies, and that wild coastal feeling that makes Surfer’s Beach so unique. The overcast sky made for perfect photography lighting, softening everything around us and letting the focus stay on the moment instead of harsh sunlight. Even with the weather, they never hesitated, and it made the experience feel even more real. There is something about standing on that shoreline, with nothing but ocean and mountains around you, that makes a proposal feel unforgettable.

The session started out like a typical couples session, with a few relaxed photos on the beach that could easily pass for Christmas card photos. The wind was strong and the air was cold, but Makenna and Tyler handled it like pros and made the most of every moment. Surfer’s Beach always has a way of making sessions feel a little adventurous, and this one was no different.

After we spent some time down by the water, we made our way up the hill overlooking the beach. This was the spot Tyler had picked out ahead of time, and once we reached the top, the moment finally came. Tyler turned to Makenna, took a breath, and asked the big question. Without hesitation, Makenna said yes, and the excitement that followed made the cold, the wind, and the long drive completely worth it.

Not long after the proposal, the weather shifted in the best way possible. Snow started falling softly along the shoreline, covering the beach in the kind of quiet, beautiful snowfall that only seems to happen in Kodiak. It made the moment feel even more surreal, like the whole scene slowed down just long enough for them to take it all in. Surfer’s Beach is one of those places that already feels wild and unforgettable, but with the snow falling around us, it turned into something even more special, and a proposal I will never forget.
