Surfer’s Beach is one of my favorite locations on the Kodiak road system, and every time I photograph a session there it feels completely different depending on the season. Theresa and Tim’s couples session took place right in the peak of summer, when the greenery is at its fullest and the coastline feels especially alive. With the mountains in the distance, the ocean stretching out behind them, and the lupine in full bloom, it was the perfect setting for a playful and romantic session.
From the moment we started shooting, I could tell Theresa and Tim were completely comfortable in front of the camera. They were so natural together, and it made the whole session feel effortless. Some couples take a little time to warm up, but with them it felt like they had done this a hundred times before. They were playful, relaxed, and fully trusted the process, which made it easy to capture moments that felt genuine instead of posed.
Summer at Surfer’s Beach is one of the most beautiful times of year to photograph. The hills are bright green, the wildflowers are everywhere, and the lupine adds so much color along the shoreline and the cliffs. Even with the sun out, the wind coming off the ocean kept the day chilly, which is pretty typical for Kodiak. Theresa and Tim were such great sports about it and never let the cold slow them down.
We moved around the beach, stopping in different spots where the light and the scenery looked best. The mix of ocean views, greenery, and mountains makes Surfer’s Beach one of the most versatile photo locations in Kodiak, especially during the summer months. Every direction you turn feels like a new backdrop, which makes it a perfect place for couples sessions.
This session was one of those that reminded me how much fun photos can be when people just let themselves enjoy the moment. Theresa and Tim brought so much energy, laughter, and connection to the shoot, and it made the whole evening feel easy and natural. Sessions like this are exactly why Surfer’s Beach continues to be one of my favorite places to photograph on the island.
