Surfer’s Beach is one of my favorite locations on the Kodiak road system, and it is easy to see why it has become such a popular spot for photography sessions. With ocean views, mountain backdrops, and wide open space, this location offers a little bit of everything. No matter the season, Surfer’s Beach always feels adventurous, but during the summer months it becomes especially beautiful.

One of the best things about Surfer’s Beach is how much variety you get in one place. You have the shoreline, the cliffs, the greenery, and the mountains all within walking distance. This makes it easy to create a full gallery without having to travel between locations. During one of my summer couples sessions with Theresa and Tim, the scenery was at its peak. The hills were bright green, the lupine was in full bloom, and the ocean views stretched out in every direction.

Summer at Surfer’s Beach is one of the most colorful times of year for photos. The greenery is full, the wildflowers add so much texture to the background, and the long daylight hours make it easier to schedule sessions at the best time of day. Even with the sun out, the wind coming off the water keeps the temperature cool, which is very typical for Kodiak. It can feel chilly, but that coastal weather is part of what makes this location so unique.

Another reason I love Surfer’s Beach for photography sessions is how natural everything feels. There is plenty of room to walk around, explore, and let moments happen without feeling crowded or rushed. Sessions here tend to feel more relaxed and playful, which makes it perfect for couples, engagements, and portraits.

Surfer’s Beach also photographs beautifully in almost any weather. Overcast skies create soft lighting, wind adds movement, and even colder days can make the photos feel more dramatic and true to Kodiak. In the winter season, the beach takes on a completely different kind of beauty. Snow can fall along the shoreline while the greenery turns into deep amber and golden tones, giving the whole landscape a softer, more rugged look that feels uniquely Kodiak. Every season brings something different, which is one of the reasons I continue to come back to this location.

If you are looking for a place with ocean views, mountain scenery, and a little bit of adventure, Surfer’s Beach is always one of my top recommendations for photography sessions in Kodiak. It is one of those locations that never looks the same twice, and that is exactly what makes it so special.
